We are so excited to honor Maria Silvana Vargas as a Boys Hope Girls Hope Woman of Hope in 2020.
Silvana Vargas is a COO/ Business Controls Officer for Bank of America’s Global Corporate and Investment Banking business, overseeing the US, Canada and Latin American activities. Maria was born and raised in Montevideo, Uruguay and moved to Brazil in 2004 for her undergraduate studies. She graduated with a Major in Economics in 2008 and holds FINRA licenses for Investment Banking Representative and Securities Supervisor.
Currently in her role as COO, she drives operational and control enhancements and oversees business activities to ensure adherence to the regulatory framework, internal policies, and industry best practices. She joined Merrill Lynch Brazil in 2006 as an intern and has held several COO roles covering multiple businesses and regions. She relocated to New York in 2014 to support the creation of the governance framework for the newly created Latin America region.
Since 2015, Silvana has been part of the leadership team of Bank of America’s Hispanic/Latino Employee Network (HOLA) in NY. The group executes initiatives focused on Latino employees, clients and community across its 4 pillars: volunteerism, business strategy, recruiting and professional development. She co-chaired the organization in 2016, for which she earned a prestigious Global Diversity & Inclusion Award from Bank of America’s Global D&I Council, and has co-chaired the group’s Executive Advisory Board since 2019.
In 2018, Silvana was nominated by Bank of America and was a recipient of Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers award, granted by the Hispanic Association for Corporate Responsibility (HACR). The award recognizes Hispanic/Latinos under 40 years old who have shown exceptional leadership qualities in Fortune 500 companies along with a proven commitment to the Hispanic community.
She speaks fluent Spanish, Portuguese and English and basic Italian and French. In her free time she enjoys traveling, reading, outdoor activities and spending time with her family.
