Summer Enrichment Academy at St. Joseph's College

St. Joseph’s College and Boys Hope Girls Hope are proud to announce the creation of the Summer Enrichment Academy, a five-week program designed to prepare scholars for life in BHGHNY's boarding program, high school, and college.

The Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) is a highly-structured & academically-rigorous program that will better prepare incoming students for life as BHGHNY scholars and ease their transitions from middle school to high school. For returning students, the program will prevent “summer learning loss” and provide an opportunity to become proficient in essential skills for upper high school and college. The 2014 session will take place on the campus of St. Joseph’s College—located in the historic Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn—from Tuesday, July 8 to Thursday, August 7.

The curriculum will be primarily focused on mastering skills in math, writing, reading comprehension, and on promoting active learning and the development of consistent and productive study habits. BHGHNY is also planning a wide range of extracurricular activities (on select afternoons) to provide recreation, discovery, and relaxation to participants.

BHGHNY, St. Joseph's College, YES!Solutions, and a growing coalition of insurance companies and other businesses in the NYC financial sector collaborated to make SEA a reality.  Every student will have use of a personal laptop computer, a first-step in closing the learning skills gap.  With help from Instructors and volunteer mentors in the YES!Solutions Learning Fitness Lab on campus,  our young scholars will learn to think ahead, organize their work, and master the How-To of learning.

St. Joseph’s to Provide Space and Support for College Readiness Summer Program

BROOKLYN, NY – June 10, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College and Boys Hope Girls Hope are proud to announce the creation of the Boys Hope Girls Hope Summer Academy, a five-week program designed to provide disadvantaged youth who demonstrate academic potential with the support they need to ensure success in the Boys Hope Girls Hope boarding program and in high school.

"The College is delighted to partner with Boys Hope Girls Hope on this important endeavor." stated Sister Elizabeth A. Hill, president, St. Joseph’s College. "Boys Hope Girls Hope is providing these students with the foundations they need to thrive following high school, and we are only too happy to offer a stimulating and hopefully inspiring environment for them as they develop vital skills for college success."

This program will be hosted by the College from Tuesday, July 8 to Thursday, August 7 and will serve approximately 45 high school freshmen and sophomores who are members of Boys Hope Girls Hope. Participating students will obtain both the social and academic foundations they will need for college success; along with the necessary prep work in math, reading, and writing, they will be exposed to the rigor and competitive environment present in college in order to prepare them for post-secondary success.

“Kudos to St. Joseph's College for so generously hosting our inaugural Boys Hope Girls Hope "prep school for prep school,” stated Sister Mary Lanning, Vice-Chair, Boys Hope Girls Hope New York. “The impact of our being able to welcome our incoming 9th graders to our Summer Enrichment Program on a college campus is calculable.  For many of our children and their families, Summer 2014 at St. Joseph's College will be the first time they can visualize how different life can be when our opportunities and our choices align. “
