BHGHNY Celebrates the Holidays
December

BHGHNY celebrated the Holiday Season at St. Joseph's College and used the occasion to salute the scholars’ outstanding work and effort during the fall semester.  Joining us for the festive evening were Board of Trustees Vice Chair Mary Lanning, Secretary Donald F. Privett, Executive Director, Brad Zervas, former Dean of BHGHNY Girls Program Rachel Castro, former Co-Principals of Catherine McAuley High School Margaret Lake, and Josephine Valente, BHGHNY staff, volunteers, and tutors.

BHGHNY would like to thank its Board of Trustees, Yes!Solutions, St. Joseph’s College, Regis High School, and its dedicated staff, workshop instructors, and volunteers for making the event possible and for their continuous and generous support to our scholars.

Each year Regis High School Students save up their own money to buy gifts for our scholars.  The Regis boys wrap the gifts and write personal notes to accompany them, and address them individually to each of our scholars. On behalf of everyone at BHGHNY, thank you to our friends at Regis for their service, thoughtfulness, generosity, and kindness.

A special Honors Table was beautifully planned and decorated by Program Deans Sara Bryant, Jean-Yves Lafond, and our resident Art Therapist, Naomi Cohen-Thompson. Seated at the distinguised table were scholars who excelled at school (90 and above GPA) and received at least a 3.5 on BHGHNY Program Report Card. They were: freshmen Veronica Carrasco, Briana Laurenceau, Aissatu Bah, Andrea Coleman, Alan Rodriguez, and Jeremy Diaz; juniors Maya Nasser, Lusmer Quintana, Adrian Roque-Silvas, Austin Joseph and Stéphan Pemberton; seniors Shanika Foster, Teanna Holmes, Rovelo Martinez, and Javier Morales. Keep up the great work!

Senior Teanna Holmes—who learned during the course of the evening that she had been accepted Early-Decision to Mount Holyoke College—was recipient of the inaugural Valente-Lake Spirit Award presented to a Boys Hope Girls Hope young woman to recognize the qualities and attributes that were the hallmarks of two distinguished career educators and school leaders, Margaret Lake, and Josephine Valente: compassion, empathy, excellence and service. Congratulations on both achievements Teanna! What a night! Your hard work, effort, discipline, and dedication are paying off!

For their outstanding work in our English workshop and for being the scholars who read the most books in the past 3 months (on top of the books assigned in their regular classes) , Freshmen Veronica Carrasco (13 books) and sophomore Jordy Santos (9 books) were the recipients of the Reading Award.

At BHGHNY, the belief that “Attitude and Effort trump everything” is constantly reminded to our young men and women. As such, we recognized and celebrated the outstanding effort and accomplishments of two of our scholars, freshmen Bryan Rosado and Claudine Auguste, recipients of our 2013 Effort Award.
